How to Choose the Best Pole Dance Shorts for Ultimate Comfort

Good pole dance shorts are short (so your leg skin has contact with the pole), flexible (for full freedom of movement), and made of moisture-wicking fabric. A shorter leg = better grip for pole dance moves held with the thigh or knee. Below, I’ll explain which length and style to choose – tailored to you and your level.

Why is choosing the right shorts important?

Because your shorts are responsible for your leg grip. Bare skin holds the pole much better than fabric, so the leg length really affects whether a shape "sticks." Plus, there’s the comfort factor: good shorts shouldn't restrict your movement, they should wick away sweat, and protect your skin from chafing.

And this isn't just my "hunch" – it’s how skin physics works. Research on skin friction shows that its adhesion increases with the hydration of the stratum corneum (Cua et al., British Journal of Dermatology, 1990; also confirmed in Zhu et al., Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2011). That’s why a thin layer of natural sweat helps you hold on – but when your skin is drenched in sweat, it gets slippery. That’s why two things go hand in hand: skin-to-pole contact (short legs) and moisture-wicking fabric.

A good grip is also a matter of safety – injuries are not uncommon in pole dance. In a global online survey of pole dancers, the most commonly reported injuries involved the shoulder (54.5%), wrist (34.2%), and back (24.7%) (Lee, Lin, Tan, Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, 2020), and in another study of 320 dancers, over 85% had experienced some kind of injury (Szopa et al., Scientific Reports, 2022). A secure leg grip takes the load off your hands and shoulders, so choosing the right shorts isn't just about aesthetics – it’s an element of body control on the mat.

How to choose pole dance shorts?

Three things determine if shorts are good for training:

CriterionWhat to look for
Leg lengthShort = more skin = better grip. Longer = more protection and coverage.
Cut and riseHigh-waisted adds support and confidence; the cut should not restrict movement.
MaterialFlexible, breathable, quick-drying; fits well and holds its shape.

Which shorts for your level?

Your needs change over time in the studio:

  • Beginner – slightly longer shorts can be more comfortable: they provide more protection and confidence while you're learning the basics.
  • Advanced – for more difficult shapes, you'll often choose shorter, minimalist models for maximum skin grip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are pole dance shorts so short?

Because bare leg skin has better adhesion to the pole than fabric. In shapes held with the thigh or knee, it is this skin contact that determines stability and safety.

Which shorts for a beginner?

To start, slightly longer, flexible shorts work well – they give more protection and confidence when learning the basics. You’ll reach for shorter, minimalist models once you start doing shapes that rely on leg grip.

Can I train in leggings instead of shorts?

For warm-ups and learning the basics, yes, but for shapes held with your legs, you need skin-to-pole contact – that’s when shorts are irreplaceable.
